Race Report: August 2019 (2)

The second half of August has seen Sarn Helen shirts appearing across Wales, as well as over the border, with a clink of medals and achievement of personal bests.

Cilycwm

On a sunny Friday evening, on 23rd August at the Cilycwm 5-mile fun run, raising money for Wales Air Ambulance, Club members achieved the following results: Irfon Thomas, 4th overall with a time of 35:38, Mitchell Readwin with a time of 43:39, and Sian Bela Jenkins with 49:00.

Ras Beca

The sun shone down on the Preseli Mountains for the 42nd Ras Beca, a five-mile fell race. In a field of 48 runners, Glyn Price was placed 6th overall with a time of 43:20. Carwyn Thomas took 8th place with a time of 47:44, Tomos Morgans was placed 14th with a time of 49:33, Nia Venville was 3rd female and 26th overall with a time of 1:02:43, and Huw Price was 33rd with a time of 1:04:56.

Severn Bridge

Sarn Helen members seized the opportunity to run across the closed Severn Bridge in the blazing sunshine of Sunday 25th August. With no breeze, and in baking conditions, 1335 runners took part in the half marathon. Emma Gray was a guide runner for Louise Jenkins of Rhedwyr Emlyn, a familiar face at events, who, having lost her sight fifteen years ago, took up running and has been fundraising for a guide dog in memory of her first one, Opel. They crossed the line with the partner guide, Alison, in a time of 03:01:14. Sarn Helen’s Mitchell Readwin achieved a time of 01:57:07, Graham Penn recorded a time of 02:31:45, and Nicola Davies crossed the line at 02:46:14. In a field of 1087 10k runners, Rebecca Doswell achieved a time of 01:07:07.

Ras y Cnicht

Heading northwards, on 24 August 2019, Nigel Davies took on the challenge of Ras y Cnicht, hosted by Eryri Harriers, in the Moelwynion hills, Snowdonia, where it is the fifth highest mountain in the range. Nigel completed with a great time of 54:21.

Ras Cippyn

On the sunny evening of Friday 23rd August, Sarn Helen Club members Delyth Crimes, Eric Rees, Owen McConochie and Carol Rees took part in Ras Cippyn, with entrants running the four-mile, seven-mile and half marathon setting off together from Poppit on a hilly road course with a beautiful view of the sunset over Cardigan Bay before a final downhill section to the finish. All routes followed the same first couple of miles to St.Dogmaels, with the seven-milers and half marathon runners continuing up Cwm Degwel. Sarn results for the half marathon were as follows: in the 13.1 mile race: Owen McConnochie, 01:54:19; Eric Rees, 01:57:38; Delyth Crimes, 02: 05:07 and Carol Rees, 02:17:05.

Cardiff 10k, Coed y Brenin, Cotswolds

Sunday 1 September was a busy day for Sarn members: Liz Pugh achieved a personal best at the Cardiff Met Cardiff 10k, organised by Kidney Wales, with a cracking time of 54:47.
Also that day, at Coed y Brenin’s Trail Wales 10k event, 300 runners took on the challenges of forestry trails in beautiful surroundings. Lisa Naden Hughes achieved 30th Open Female, with a time of 1:09:51, and Dawn Kenwright was first F60+ lady in a time of 00:59:17.
And finally, again on 1 September, and over the border, the sun shone down for Tough Runner’s inaugural trail half marathon and 10k races in the grounds of Sudeley Castle, in the Cotswolds. 443 10k runners made their way along woodland tracks, fields, pathways and castle avenues, with a few log-jams at stiles and narrow bridges. Rebecca Doswell achieved a time of 01:24:57.
